Description: Howry is a deep, clear lake bordered primarily by rock shorelines. East Howry Swamp lies at the far east side where water exits through a creek and is the portage out of Howry to Murray Lake. At the opposite end you will find a beautiful waterfall from Gem Lake and a portage where most of the through travellers enter. Two islands dominate the middle of the lake. The East island is the smallest island and sometimes contains a flagged campsite for Killarney. However, overuse often requires the campsite is closed for a season or two while the island heals. On the west island you will find the Cramer cabin built in the early years of last century and is open for travellers and campers. It is not part of the campgound so reservations are not necessary. I highly recommend you plan on spending a night in the cabin. You will never forget the experience. Its one of the highlights of my visit every year. The south side of the lake is dominated by the steep face of the La Cloche mountain range. And to the southwest, a silver nob of white rock rises into the horizon. It provides a spectacular view of the park and surrounding lakes.
Strategy: Canoes are cached at the end of the portage. I would recommend using the poor man's troll Throw out at a 45 degree behind you. Plant your rod between your legs and leisure paddle the north shore. Use a lure like a Shadrap, Rappala, or Hot-n-tot. This is extremely effective for pike.

For smallies use a worm harness, plow jockeys, or live crawlers about 20 feet out from beaver huts.
Things to
Consider:
The portage to Howery is well worth the walk. The mountains, the islands, and the waterfall all make this a two thumbs up. Remember that you will be
canoing also. Because of the distance, people should be in reasonable health, pack a lunch with plenty of beverages, and pack rain gear.

The wind generally kicks up in the afternoon and blows from west to east. Hug the North Shore and use the islands as winds breaks.
